A Little About Me
Gretchen is constantly exploring and studying different styles of movement and exercise and loves to share these discoveries with her clients. She enjoys helping people find their body blind spots and muscle imbalances so that they can improve their body awareness and feel more at ease in their bodies.
Gretchen’s classes focus on healthy range of joint motion and strength with an emphasis on recovery from the daily stresses of both sedentary and intensely active lifestyles. Her classes include a unique blend of both traditional and novel variations of yoga poses, breath and mindfulness practices, corrective and strengthening exercises, and self myofascial release work with therapy balls.
Building on the belief that we are all our best healer, Gretchen’s classes encourage an atmosphere of self-inquiry, self-discovery, and self-care. Students have described Gretchen's classes as simultaneously gentle yet challenging and report that they come away feeling relaxed and restored. Her classes are a great compliment to most sports and training programs. Gretchen has experience teaching beginners, athletes, computer-users, and seniors.
Gretchen started practicing yoga in 1998 as an antidote for the stresses imposed on her body from both active outdoor adventuring and a software industry job that required sitting at a computer all day. While she found the physical effects she was looking for from yoga, she feels blessed to have also discovered a grounding and centering practice that brings her mind, breath, and body into alignment. In 2008, Gretchen enrolled in an Advanced Studies Program at the Yoga Room Berkeley. In 2011, Gretchen took a break from her job in the software industry, unsure whether it was a temporary or permanent break. She traveled for about a year in North, Central, and South America with her husband. Upon returning to the SF Bay Area in 2012, Gretchen completed her 500-hr teacher training with the Yoga Room and began teaching alignment-focused hatha yoga at yoga studios, senior centers, and private work places. At that same time, Gretchen increased her studies of self-myofascia release techniques using various balls and foam rollers. She is a certified Roll Model Method® and Yoga Tune Up® instructor. Gretchen has been incorporating Yoga Tune Up® exercises and the Roll Model Method® balls into her yoga classes since 2014.
